If you spend eight hours in a place, everyday, chances are you are going to start building a relationship with the people around you. Friendships naturally evolve around your work environment. No matter what happens, you will always have the experience of working at the same place, and dealing with the same challenges in common. However, what happens when your work friendship starts to blossom into a work relationship?

First of all, there is a reason experts dont dating the people around the water cooler. At first it might seem cool to be dating someone you hang out with all day, but ultimately it isnt going to work out, even if your relationship is perfect.

If your relationship is perfect, and you guys are planning on getting married. Just think: you will be spending every day and night with this person for the rest of your life. When you leave for work, they will be in the car with you, when you come home they will too. You will get virtually no time by yourself. That is a rough place to be in, so unless one of you is willing to go find another job, there are going to be issues in the long run. Not to mention, how would you feel if your partner keeps getting promoted above you? It would cause undue tension in your relationship to be going through competition at work.

Very few work relationships work out, and it is more likely that this is going to fall apart. When it fails, you are going to be forced to see them every work day for 8 hours. You are going to have to communicate with them in a professional manner for a long time, and you might have to see them moving on. It might mess with your other office friendships, and make you the lone person out. If the breakup affects your ability to perform your job, then you are looking at losing your job. Is it worth losing your job and your friends over a work room tryst?

Avoiding a work place romance might be hard to do, but regardless of the out come it is worth doing. You never know, the person you are pining for might find another job soon, and then they would be okay to date! So sit back, be patient, and look elsewhere for your dating pool
